Very small modification of player.mdc would allow hats: just copy and paste head, enlarge it, and then change "makecoords" to hat position in texture file.

I tried to make a skin of a soldier/commando.

I also attached a little skin template that I used as well (Red is front and blue is back or minor faces).

Criticism welcome.

@ taco / anyone building skins

While increasing texture size does allow awesomeness, (I too am playing about with texture sizes at the moment) I consider the following when making my textures

transparency depth:
-
-aplha uses more data than single 'colour'
-thus; unless being really cocky. my textures are output using single colour transparency

colour depth:
-
-colour 1-256 (palette based) can compress better than 24bit (or higher) colour depth
- I attempt to output textures on a palette level and reduce number of colours to a suitable level

all that said

here's someone you may recognise, not 100% happy with it, but its not bad going (if anyone wants to spend 5 mins to tidy it up a little, thats cool):

Stoomtrooper

and a slightly 'clearer' skin texture zone map (taken from the old mincraft one and adjusted to better fit the Manic Digger model textures)

EDIT: made the skin areas cleaner still: and re-edited to fit template
