The wiki is a pretty good resource for a lot stuff. Although a few things are outdated here and there.

It seems like that should be something that could be modded.. Take the existing minecart and allow/enable them to be linked together.. Improvements to that down the road would include remapping it as a different item (to allow skinning it appropriately).
